About

Ælfgar (d. c.1062), Earl of Mercia, son of Leofric and Godgifu, was twice outlawed and twice fought his way back to his earldoms with fleets raised in Ireland and the alliance of Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, the Welsh king who married his daughter. His grandsons Edwin and Morcar led the last English resistance to the Conqueror; his daughter Ealdgyth was for a few months Queen of England. Our descent runs through him into the Mercian line.
