Alice de Newburgh

||MATERNITY NARROWED 7 Aug 2026|| Source: Cokayne, Complete Peerage (1st edn), 'WARWICK' pp.52-71, page images read 7 Aug 2026. p.55 says Sir William Mauduit succeeded to the earldom in 1263 'being only s. and h. of William Mauduit of Hanslope, Bucks (d. April 1257), by ALICE (living 1246, but d. before 1263), SISTER (BY THE HALF BLOOD) TO EARL HENRY, the father of the said Margaret'. HALF blood is the whole point: Earl Henry, the 5th Earl (b.1192), was Waleran's son BY HIS FIRST WIFE MARGARET DE BOHUN. SO ALICE WAS NOT MARGARET DE BOHUN'S DAUGHTER, and the Bohun and Gloucester-of-Hereford descent does NOT reach this family by this road - a negative result worth keeping. Her mother was one of Waleran's two later wives: (i) the 'Maud' whom Cokayne says only that he 'is said to have' married, or (ii) ALICE, widow of John de Limesi, da. of ROBERT DE HARCOURT of Stanton by ISABEL DE CAMVILLE - who was Waleran's widow, living 1207-08. The chronology (our Alice living 1246, her son of age by the 1250s) fits the Harcourt marriage comfortably, AND HARCOURT/CAMVILLE WOULD BE A REAL GAIN - which is exactly why it is NOT wired here. Cokayne does not say; it must be earned. Alice de Newburgh carried the blood, and eventually the earldom, of Warwick to the Mauduits.
