About
Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd (killed 1136) is the warrior princess of Welsh history: daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan of Gwynedd, wife of Gruffudd ap Rhys of Deheubarth, she raised and led an army against the Normans while her husband was away, and was defeated, captured and beheaded at Kidwelly; the field is still called Maes Gwenllian. For a century after, Welshmen went to battle crying her name. She was the Lord Rhys's mother; she is also, by this wiring, our ancestress; and her brother Owain Gwynedd and sister Susanna were already in this tree, so all three children of Gruffudd ap Cynan now stand together.
