About

Roger de Mortimer of Wigmore was one of the greatest of the Marcher lords and the crown's iron man against Simon de Montfort: it was to Mortimer's men that de Montfort fell at Evesham in 1265, and the grisly trophies of that field went to Wigmore. He married Maud de Braose, and died in 1282 with the conquest of Wales, which he had spent his life advancing, all but complete. Through his mother Gwladus Ddu he was himself a grandson of Llywelyn the Great - the Marcher hammer of the Welsh was half a Welsh prince.
