Bernard the Second, Billung Duke of Saxony, spent a forty-year reign resisting three emperors in defence of Saxony's old liberties, the hereditary opposition of the German realm. His daughter Gertrude married into the counts of Holland, and the Billung blood ran south and west to reach, in time, this family.
