About
Bertha of Holland (c.1055-1094), Queen of France, was married to Philip I to seal a peace and bore him the heir, the future Louis VI. In 1092 the king repudiated her for Bertrade de Montfort, the scandal of the age; it cost Philip excommunication and kept France's king from the First Crusade. Bertha died two years later at Montreuil; her son nonetheless inherited everything. Through her the counts of Holland stand behind the Capetian kings, and behind us.
