About

Judith of Bavaria (c.797-843), Empress, was the second wife of Louis the Pious and one of the most contested women of the Carolingian century: her determination to win a kingdom for her son Charles the Bald helped drive the civil wars that split Charlemagne's empire. Twice seized by her stepsons' factions, accused, cloistered and restored, she outlasted them all; and her son took the western kingdom that became France. Poets at court praised her beauty and learning; her enemies' chronicles did the opposite. She is our ancestor through Charles the Bald.
