About
Geoffrey FitzPiers rose from a royal forester's household to be Chief Justiciar of England under Richard and John, and Earl of Essex in right of his wife Beatrice de Say - the working head of English government for fourteen years. When he died in 1213 King John is said to have remarked that now he would be king indeed. This family descends from him twice, by two wives: through Maud, his daughter by the Say heiress, and through John FitzGeoffrey, his son by Aveline de Clare.
