Geoffrey I 'Greymantle' (d.987), Count of Anjou, fought for the last Carolingians and then helped make Hugh Capet king, holding Anjou through the change of dynasties with the family's usual sure instinct. His byname is from his cloak; the chroniclers made him a paladin of legend within two centuries. Both his children carry our descent; Fulk Nerra in Anjou and Ermengarde in Brittany.
